As someone who has enjoyed countless meals at Applebee’s, the news of this restaurant closing its door has been heartbreaking. Especially, Applebee in Hudson, New York has been my go-to spot for family dinners or when catching up with friends. But, sadly, this chapter is coming to an end now.

The Closure

The Applebee restaurant at 420 Fairview Avenue, Hudson, New York, officially closed its door on Sunday, May 19, 2024. After serving successfully for more than 15 years, the restaurant is closing as part of a broader trend with Dine Brands Global planning. They will slowly shut down 25 to 35 Applebee locations across the country this year.

Besides closures in the Lower Hudson Valley, another franchise that experienced closure is Red Lobster locations in Nanuet and Scarsdale.

Reasons Behind the Closure

Earlier, there were speculations of franchisee issues along with other rumours behind the closure of Applebee. However, finally, Tony Moralejo, the president of Applebee, came up with a statement that said, “Applebee closures are a result of struggling trade areas”.

This isn’t the first time when Applebee is closing at different locations. Instead, back in 2017, the franchisee had to shut over 100 Applebee’s restaurants due to a failed rebranding effort and declining sales. The company is continuously reassuring that they are doing everything they can to handle the impact of these closures, but it still feels like a loss.

Impact on the Community

The staff and workers at Applebee Hudson have been offered new jobs, bringing a sigh of relief. However, for our regulars who kept on choosing those delicious meals and homely ambience, the loss feels personal. Regular customers are losing a favourite dining spot, especially the one that has been a part of their lives for close to two decades now.

I know I am not the only one who will miss Hudson’s Applebee, but I will do it profoundly.

New York had nearly 100 Applebee’s restaurants and the chain was recently named as one of the most popular in America. However, this fame wasn’t long-lived, and even as I write down, many outlets have already counted their last days, and it’s past the closure.

What’s Next?

Sun shines after dark, and there’s good news for Applebee fans. As per an official announcement by the company itself, Applebee will open 25 new locations across the country in collaboration with one of the largest restaurant franchise operators, Flynn Group. This expansion is a part of the development strategy.

As someone who has spent countless evenings at Applebee’s, I will surely miss it. But, being an absolute fan of their food, I won’t mind planning a trip to one of those other locations to get my fix of those delicious appetisers and drinks.

The news of Applebee shutting many of its businesses is a reminder that no matter how big and beloved a place is, everything is replaceable. We can always expect our communities and favourite spots to change over time.
