Biscuits and Gravy Recipe

If you’re craving a breakfast that hugs you from the inside out, biscuits and gravy it is. I know many might find the name (and combination) weird, but biscuits and gravy is a Southern staple. The dish pairs buttery, melt-in-your-mouth biscuits with a flavourful sausage gravy. It is comforting, irresistible, and absolutely loved.

Ingredients

  • For the Biscuits:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 cup cold, unsalted butter

  • 3/4 cup buttermilk

  • For the Gravy:
  • 1 pound bulk breakfast sausage

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups milk

  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Directions

  • Step 1: First thing first, preheat your oven to 425°F and move to the real deal
  • Take a large mixing bowl and add flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Give them a good stir, and then add cubes of cold butter. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix the hard butter into the dry ingredients, this may take time, but it is the basics for a fine result.
  • Now add in buttermilk, little by little, to form a rough dough. Avoid kneading or overmixing, as all we want is for the dough to come together.
  • Take down the dough onto the countertop and gently pat it out to about 1-inch thickness. Use a knife to cut out your biscuits.
  • Now prepare your baking sheet, add a butter paper, and place all the biscuits nicely. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown, and further let them cool down.
  • Step 2: While the biscuits are cooling down:
  • Place a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the sausage until it’s browned and crumbled; it will take 5 to 7 minutes. Once done, remove the sausages with a tong, leaving the drippings in the skillet.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the drippings and stir it in to remove the raw taste. Gradually whisk in the milk, preventing lumps, similar to what you do while making white sauce for pasta. Simmer the gas and cook the sauce until it thickens (about 5-7 minutes). Add more milk to keep a flowing consistency.
  • Add the cooked sausage to the gravy, and season with salt and black pepper (you can add Italian seasoning or herb of choice as well).
  • Step 3: Now, take the serving dish and place your biscuits, splitting each into half. Pour a generous amount of sausage gravy over the top and serve hot.
